Puerto Penasco is located in the Sonora region of Mexico, which is a high desert. La Jolla de Cortes is the district in which the Mayan Palace is located. The Mayan Palace is about 20 miles south of Puerto Penasco on the east shore of the Sea of Cortes.
Puerto Penasco has been and continues to be enjoyed by university students during their Holiday breaks, tourists and fishing parties. The village is also known as Rocky Point, which is a rough translation to Port of Cliffs, which is where Puerto Penasco (Port of Cliffs) derived its name, we suppose.
On November 5, 2009, President Felipe Calderon inaugurated the Mar de Cortes International Airport. This airport was developed and is operated by Grupo Vidanta. Area residents, developers and businesses are hoping international flights will soon start arriving.
This area is becoming a well known vacation destination in Mexico. For good reason too. Beautiful beaches, beautiful golf courses, welcoming resorts and close proximity to Arizona and Texas. The resorts and condominiums developed by Grupo Vidanta and Grupo Mayan are terrific as well. In fact there is lots to go. We hear Grupo Vidanta owns 20,000 acres in the La Jolla de Cortes region of the state of Sonora.
